Our History
Lothian Cat Rescue is a registered charity formed in 1978 to help cats and kittens that have been abandoned, ill-treated, neglected or are unwanted for whatever reason.
When we started, all cats and kittens were cared for in foster homes.
In 1993, the property at Cockpen Road, Bonnyrigg, was purchased to be used as a cat shelter and rescuing and rehoming began, using one room as an indoor cat room. As soon as sufficient funds were raised we erected our first row of purpose-built pens, and in May 1995 the Lady Provost officially opened the Shelter.
Further pens have been erected as more funds become available and we now have several rows of pens plus one large open pen area, allowing us to rescue and rehome almost 1,000 cats and kittens each year.
